In terms of lore, Blackwood is meant as an introduction to the Gates of Oblivion storyline. As was announced a few months ago, the Gates of Oblivion will let players return to the familiar lands of Oblivion (for those who have played The Elder Scrolls 4) and fight the Daedric Prince of destruction Mehrunes Dagon. Speaking about Dagon, he is the focus of the official gameplay launch trailer released a few hours ago. The trailer confirms that the Gates of Oblivion have been opened and sees a number of adventurers fighting against the forces of Dagon and other Daedric cultists as well as what seems to be Daedric generals of the afore mentioned god of destruction.

The trailer also mentions the Longhouse Emperors who seem to be connected in one way or another to the opening of the portals to Oblivion and the return of Dagon. As of the extent and nature of said connection, it will be up to the players to discover what is going on and eventually save Tamriel from this invasion. It is clear that there is a conspiracy involving the royal family and we will thankfully discover what this is all about as the event unfolds.

The Blackwood DLC will allow let players explore this new zone located between the rolling hills of Cyrodiil, the Black Marsh and Elsweyr. Blackwood is home to three main races, the Khajiit, the Argonians and Imperials with its main city being Leyawiin. Players will also be introduced to the new companion system that will let you explore Tamriel in order to recruit members for your party. The gameplay trailer gave a sneak peak of the way this new feature is going to play but it has already been announced that the companions will gain experience and level up as the game progresses. They will help you in your quest to close the gates of Oblivion.
